William L Gould

December 21, 1933 — May 7, 2016

William (Bill) L. Gould, 82, originally of Everett MA, passed away at his home in Roseville, CA on May 7, 2016, after fighting cancer for over 20 years.

Bill was born on December 21, 1933, son of the late William Leo and Mildred (Chalker) Gould. He is survived by his wife, Audrey, his two daughters, Kerin Gould and Kim Gould Ashizawa, and grandchildren Reina and Nicolas Ashizawa. He is also survived by his siblings, Dr. Richard Gould, Carol (Gould) Wolfrum, and Thomas Ross.

Bill worked in his mother's grocery store as a teen and joined the Air Force after graduating from Everett High School in 1951. While in the service, he was trained in airborne radar, taking classes at USC, but before deploying to the Korean War, he was in a near-fatal plane crash. Thanks to the GI Bill and a job at the Post Office, he was able to attend Babson College, graduating in 1959.

He then joined IBM, rising quickly as a skilled salesman and manager. His long career took the Gould family to North Reading MA; Barrington RI; Wellesley MA; Vestal NY; New Canaan CT; and then to Tokyo, Japan, where he launched the first Japanese PC. After starting his own technology consulting business, American Technology Group International, Bill and Audrey eventually settled in California. Even after "retiring," he continued his consulting work with TechSynergy and began writing. He also continued his lifelong love of learning, earning a PhD from LaSalle University.

A long-time resident of Sun City Roseville, known for his gracious manners and a twinkle in his blue eyes, he was active in the community, creating the SCR website, and playing bridge, and poker, but he was most proud of his work with the First Tee of Greater Sacramento golf program for youths.

Bill enjoyed golf, country music, Zane Gray novels and John Wayne movies, mixed metaphors and some bad puns, the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, studying history, vacationing in the Adirondack Mountains, and outings with his grandchildren, who inspired his book, Grandpa, Were You Young Once?

A memorial will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 19, at Sierra Pines, 7600 Whistlestop Way, Roseville. Family and friends are invited to join in remembering and celebrating Bill's life.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The First Tee of Greater Sacramento or to the Nature Conservancy (indicate member number #1005729127 on your check and note that funds should support work in the Adirondack Mountains in memory of William L. Gould).
