Virgil Steven Nelson left this earth on January 11, 2023. Sending him off to eternity with Jesus and surrounding him with love are his wife of 54 years - Jill, daughter Sherri, son Edward, son in law Chris, three grandchildren - Natasha, Jessica, and Jason and 5 great-grandchildren - Rilynn, Stella, Lincoln, Charlee Jane, and Theodore. He has 5 siblings - Connie, Roger, Judy, Craig, and Karla. Family was very important to Virgil and he loved each of them.
Virgil graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in accounting. As a CPA accountant he put these skills to use when he served in The US Air Force as a financial officer during the Vietnam war. He then went on to work as an accountant for Masonite, an assessor for Mendocino County, as an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service, and then finally as an IRS appeals court judge here in Sacramento. After retirement he volunteered with AARP helping people with their taxes.
Virgil enjoyed games of all kinds - Chess, cards, board games and athletic activities like softball, tennis, basketball, and volleyball. He will be remembered for his love of walks, his dedication to pushups, and his impressive strength in pull-ups. He loved to tell jokes, sing old hymns, and eat Apple Pie. He liked to travel the world anywhere from the Caribbean to Greece and Israel. But camping and taking the grandkids to Disneyland was high on the list as well.
Virgil Loved the Bible, and Jesus, and he was a big creation guy. He once spent a summer in Romania as a missionary and if the church doors were open you would probably find him inside. He was a Deacon, an AWANA Commander, a Bible teacher, and a Gideon. He studied his Bible everyday and was not only extremely knowledgeable on its teachings, but truly did his best to love others.
Virgil was known for his honesty, his leadership skills, and his dedication to doing what was right. While material things were not very important to him, his legacy was. He walked his talk and spoke his truth. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, son, brother and friend who freely gave of his time and resources.
