Bob was born October 12th, 1939 in Fresno, CA. He flew peacefully into the arms of his Savior & Lord after battling cancer for a year on Tuesday, February 6th, 2024. Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, Monica; a son, Heath Konkel, sister, DeeDee McArron, niece, Joni Roam, and nephew, Bret McArron of Selma, CA; and many Konkel cousins.
Bob graduated from Roosevelt High School, Fresno, in 1958; he enlisted & served in the US Navy from 1959-1963. Following his service, Bob moved to the Bay Area and began a 32-year career with AT&T as a supervising communications technician, followed by another 10 years working at the Lawrence Livermore Labs for a communications subcontractor upgrading the government phone systems.
Bob loved doing anything outdoors, from his early days in Fresno, camping with the Boy Scouts, hunting and fishing were his passions. He met Monica in 1969 and they learned to scuba dive together during their 2-year courtship; they were married in Sunnyvale on October 30th, 1971. They continued to travel in their camper, fishing, hunting & diving along the way until Heath was born in 1974. Together Bob and Monica had many new adventures: downhill skiing, back-packing, owning horses, hunting dogs. Their travels in the last 15 years took them to New Zealand, Ireland/Scotland, a river cruise in Europe, Caribbean & Mediterranean cruises, and many timeshare adventures in Hawaii and Mexico.
They moved to Felton, CA, in 1975 and lived there for 21 years, then moved to the East Bay Area until 2005 when they moved to Sedona, AZ to try retirement; they returned to California in 2009 to Sun City Roseville for Monica to resume her nursing career. Then Bob began to golf, enjoying the Sierra Pines GC men’s clubs; and was the official “chef” for the Sun City Rod & Reel club for many years.
Bob’s life is marked by his gift of service: Bob loved this country, and his Navy service was his privilege. He was a loving and faithful husband & father; he was always eager and willing to help neighbors and friends. He was a volunteer for the Felton Fire Department for many years, the Sedona Police Department; and was a “Road Warrior” at Bayside Church in Granite Bay for 10 years, always wearing his cowboy hat & great smile. Bob never said “no” to serving and he did it all with great joy. We’re going to miss Bob, aka: “Bobby-Lou”, “Mr. Wonderful”, “What about Bob”, Daddy-O, and my Sweetheart. I will always love you, Honey.
A Celebration of Bob’s Life is planned for March 8th, 2024, at 11am at Bayside Church, Blue Oaks campus, 10000 Alantown Drive, Roseville, CA 95678. A Reception will follow and all are welcome! (Bayside Blue Oaks is the building to the right of the RC Willey distribution and pick-up center, and across the street from the Sunbelt Rentals on Alantown Dr.) In lieu of flowers, Bob requested that you would just “come as you are” and celebrate and support his family on their new journey.
