Richard Nadzam, also known as Dick Nadzam, was born in Pennsylvania. He and our Mom were married for 61 years. Their love was very special. Dad was a devoted parent to all three of us and was an amazing and loving grandfather to his three grandchildren.
Dad had a fun sense of humor and had nicknames for everyone in the family. His humor included creative one-liners and he even referred to Total Wine and More as “The Toy Store”.
Dad started his executive search business in 1974 and became quite a successful businessman. Early on in the business, Mom told the story about how Dad could only afford one rose for Valentine’s Day for her. She said it was the most beautiful rose he ever gave her.
Dad would make it a point to leave work early enough to make it to Rich and Tim’s little league games still wearing his business suit and whenever a player was injured, he would run over to help. Terri and Dad made 'yule logs' each year for friends and would deliver them a few days before Christmas.
When he retired, he and Mom enjoyed traveling and he also took up photography and bird-watching.
He was also a Ball Dude for the San Francisco Giants. He loved being on the field with the players and tossing foul balls to kids in the stands.
His nickname in high school was “Windy” because he liked to talk a lot. He enjoyed track and field and specialized in javelin throwing.
He was a very proud Marine and taught us all the importance of appreciating and respecting America. His tough exterior was for show because deep down he had a very tender heart.
Dad was very generous, helping family and friends in need and at the same time, teaching us independence and the importance of hard work. One of his slogans was “You might have your stuff together but you gotta be able to pick it up!”
Dad loved the Slovak tradition of cookies and other dishes that were made every Christmas and Easter. Both he and our Mom strongly encouraged us to carry on these traditions.
Dad enjoyed a nice cigar with his beverage of choice, walks with Mom on the beach, dancing, traveling to Europe and China, making Cioppino, entertaining friends, and participating in our annual “Hunchut Golf Tournament” which he started in memory of his father.
It will be difficult not seeing Dad when we walk into the house, but he is with our Mom now and that offers comfort.
Richard's final resting place will be the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery where he will be placed by his wife, Marlene. He will receive military honors for his service to our nation at a private family gathering on March 8th, 2023.
