Richard Paul Johnson, age 87, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, in Rocklin, California. Born on June 20, 1938, in Turlock, California, Richard lived a long life shaped by faith, service, and steady perseverance.
After leaving the military, Richard earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Fresno State, focusing on Psychology, and later obtained his Marriage, Family, and Child Counselor license—accomplishments he was especially proud of after struggling as a student in grade school and high school.
He then served for 30 years as a probation officer with Fresno County. His career required patience, discernment, and resilience—qualities that marked much of his life. Even after retirement, he continued to serve in quiet, practical ways at church and by offering help where he could.
Faith was a constant presence in Richard’s life from childhood. He loved studying the Bible and spent many years teaching a Sunday school class, finding meaning in Scripture and the discipline of learning and teaching God’s Word. The Bible was never far from him—he carried it regularly, and even in his final weeks in the hospital, he asked for it to be brought to him, a quiet testament to the faith that sustained him throughout his life.
It was through church that Richard met Judy, who became his wife of 25 years. Their marriage, formed later in life, was rooted in shared faith, companionship, and commitment. Together they enjoyed time at the coast and the simple rhythms of life built side by side.
He loved golf, especially when he could play with Judy, and was a devoted fan of the San Francisco 49ers and Giants, rarely missing a game. He also found quiet satisfaction in working outdoors—building, fixing, and tending to projects with his hands. These simple, steady interests were where he felt most at home.
Richard valued time with his son and grandchildren. He enjoyed many Father’s Day barbecues surrounded by them and took pride in being part of their lives. He made a point to show up for many important moments, including soccer games, dance recitals, choir concerts, and graduations—quietly present, steady in his support, and grateful for the time they shared.
Richard is survived by his wife, Judy Johnson; his son, David Johnson; daughter-in-law, Heather Johnson; and grandchildren Aden, Ellie, and Sophia Johnson. Also, his daughter Darlene Christiansen; and grandchildren Timothy and Sean Christiansen. He is also survived by his stepdaughter Lynette Booye and son-in-law Dan Booye and stepson Rick McDonald.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Erik and Ruth Johnson.
Richard’s life was marked by a quiet faith, rooted in Scripture and lived out sincerely.
His wife Judy has moved in with her kids, Lynette and Dan Booye. Cards can be mailed to her at: 1711 Keleka Drive, Koloa, HI 96756.
