Michael Steven Perazzo
July 28, 1945- October 24, 2016
Michael "Mike" Steven Perazzo was born on July 28, 1945 in San Francisco to Frank and Lorene Perazzo, the fourth of five children. He often told stories about his childhood with big brother Dave, and his sisters, Lorene, Violet and Loretta. A second generation Genovese Italian, Mike was very proud of his family's heritage, his childhood adventures with his brother, sisters, and many cousins.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Lorene Perazzo, his siblings Violet Dykes and Dave Perazzo and his spouse Kathy Dooner-Perazzo.
Mike was a loving husband and best friend to his wife Nancy Apmann-Perazzo. He was a great dad to daughters Sunny Fowler and Cindy Perazzo-Bettencourt, and an inspiring papa/grandpa to: DJ Werning, Joshua Johnson, Kyle Bettencourt, Spencer, Carson and Delaney Hantula, Sara and Paige Williams, and Austin and Hunter Dollar. Mike was a fun and loving uncle to many nieces and nephews as well as their children.
Mike was a retired Maintenance Mechanic with a machinist rating for Westinghouse (acquired by Northrup Grumman) for over 35 years. He was an active Master Mason at Columbia-Brotherhood Lodge No. 370 and member of Asiya Shriner's International No.15.
When Mike was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in his lungs in 2005, he used this diagnosis as a "catalytic converter," dedicating every intention in his being to fulfilling many, many longtime dreams. He and Nancy married, created a beautiful, loving and inviting home together in Pine Grove, traveled the world, toured the country and shared a unique passion for hot rods.
Mike had exceptional mechanical skills and was a self-described motor-head and best friend to many, including his numerous "car buddies." In Mike's World, his well-appointed hot rod garage was ground zero for all good things. Sirius XM was always playing great 70s music, and family and friends were always welcomed to pitch in on his latest project. Along the way, Mike rebuilt his prized 34 Chevy Cabriolet, a 56 Chevy Belair, and the 1936 Chevy pickup truck that he gifted to grandson Austin when he graduated from high school this year. All of Mike's hot rods won awards at car shows over the years, but he was probably proudest of the Last Bash's Non-Ford award. This was awarded to him by the Obsolete Iron Street Rod Club, an organization of his peers and other self-taught hot rod artists.
Mike loved people, and his positive attitude was an inspiration to many. He knew how to live life to its fullest. Just this year Mike received a letter from President Barack Obama commending him for his courageous 12-year battle against cancer and for serving as an example of hope to all around him.
Mike wanted to leave this earth and us the way he lived, doing what he knew he needed to do in his own special way and surrounded by the love of family. Mike's spirit left his body on the afternoon of Monday, October 24, 2016. He was surrounded by family and listening to his favorite song, "Spirit in the Sky."
When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
