Mark Fredrickson was born in in 1982 in Mountain View, California to Chris and Carol Fredrickson. He and his younger sister Megan Fredrickson moved to the Santa Cruz mountains with their mother and spent much of their childhood riding dirt bikes, building tree forts, and generally causing chaos for their parents. Their childhood nonsense has continued for decades.
Mark built a strong community of friends in his teenage years. These friends overcame a lifetime of trials together, using their homemade backyard wrestling clubs and punk rock passions to try to make sense of growing up. Mark was always close with his family in some way, but also struggled through many challenges as a teen. These struggles ultimately led to three years of incarceration in his early twenties.
Upon his release, he used that experience, along with a gift from his loving mother Carol to chart a new course for his life. She provided him a new start in a sober living home where Mark was able to thrive in his recovery. In one of these homes in San Jose, two important things happened - he formed a strong recovery community of his own, and met his life partner, Lauren Hadley.
Having a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a wise mind for business, he decided to start a sober living company of his own. Initially formed with his mother’s support and guidance, Mark started Second Chance Sobriety Homes. What began as just one house, grew steadily - one home became four, and eventually Mark grew the business into 17 sober living homes. This was more than just a successful business – Second Chance Sobriety Homes became the manifestation of his life’s mission to help people with addictions transition from hospitals, jails and medical treatment facilities into something more. He helped people receive the support they needed, giving them a new chance at sobriety and life.
After establishing his business, Mark attended the University of California at Berkeley on a full scholarship, graduating with honors with a degree in Rhetoric. He had many professional opportunities upon graduation, but ultimately recognized the lack of sufficient resources in his community and decided to continue helping those struggling with addictions receive a chance at sobriety. Mark grew into a pillar throughout California addictions recovery and treatment community, working together with other individuals toward the common passion for this cause.
In 2016, Mark and his partner Lauren welcomed their first daughter, Olivia. During their adventure as new parents, Mark continued to grow his business and pursue other passions, including Muay Thai kickboxing. He often taught classes and mentored youth of varying ages and skills in kickboxing and Muay Thai.
Mark also had a lot of fun reuniting American Standard, the punk rock band he fronted in his teens. The band had recently grown in notoriety on the local punk rock scene, playing shows frequently and recording in the studio.
Mark and Lauren grew their family when Charlotte joined them in 2021. Mark loved his daughters wholeheartedly and savored watching them grow to share his sense of humor; spending time teaching them to skateboard and supporting their musical talents.
Mark was a beloved son, brother, partner, father and friend. His impact and personal passion for supporting those with addictions was far reaching. Mark’s efforts changed and saved countless lives.
