Lora Suzanne MacKinnon, a deeply loved daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, niece, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, in Granite Bay, California. Born on December 15, 1970, in San Jose, California, Lora touched the lives of all who knew her with her sweet, kind, and loving nature. She courageously battled Stage 4 Neuroendocrine Cancer, which she faced with remarkable dignity and grace, exuding a positive mindset and hope for healing until the end.
Lora’s early years were spent in San Jose, where she shared countless adventures with her twin brother, David. Together, they rode bikes through their neighborhood, explored local creeks, and indulged in the joys of childhood, from Easter egg hunts to swimming at the Los Gatos Motel with cousins. Family gatherings at their grandparents' farm in Kerman and Aunt Anita's home in Fresno were filled with laughter and cherished memories, where croquet games and outdoor adventures became the backdrop of their formative years.
As a spirited teenager, Lora experienced what she affectionately referred to as “the Wild years.” Her youth was filled with escapades in Orinda—biking, skateboarding, and exploring all that life had to offer with friends. In high school, she moved to San Diego and was embraced by Aunt Lois, Uncle Bob, and cousins Aimee and Katie. While there, she enjoyed the beach and the sun, and embarked on new experiences.
Lora's educational path began at Torrey Pines High School, where she received her diploma, followed by professional development courses that honed her skills in her chosen career. She began her professional journey as an Administrative Assistant before earning the respect and admiration of colleagues as the Head Accountant and CFO of a small law firm.
Her proudest accomplishments came in the form of her two beautiful daughters, Rachel and Lindsey, who have grown into strong, independent young women. She also became a grandmother to little Emberly Godschalk, an experience she was grateful to be a part of, if only for a short time. Lora enjoyed designing aesthetically pleasing spaces adorned with vibrant flowers and planning family adventures, including trips to Disneyland, San Diego, the Witter cabin, and Aunt Wilma and Russ’ Lakehouse.
Throughout her life, Lora exemplified kindness and independence. She always believed in the power of positive thinking—something she instilled in her loved ones. She remained open to exploring new ideas, cultures, and beliefs while adhering to her core values of faith, family, and love.
In her last months, despite her illness, Lora maintained her positive mindset and loving spirit. She took time to indulge in her favorite foods and treats from childhood, her highly specific Starbuck’s drinks, and enjoyed watching videos of her favorite music and films. Cared for by her devoted brother David, her beloved daughters, and other loved ones, she reflected on her life, inspiring those around her with her resilience and grace. Lora created a tranquil bedroom sanctuary around her, reflecting her love for nature and art, making her final days filled with peace and love.
Lora is survived by mother, Eleanor Witter; daughters, Rachel and Lindsey MacKinnon; granddaughter, Emberly Godschalk; and her twin brother, David Pauls. She also leaves behind many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins who will carry her memory in their hearts.
As we prepare to honor her memory, we reflect on the beauty she brought into the world—a beautifully unique soul who will be missed dearly. A graveside service will be held on July 10, 2025, at Roseville Cemetery, where we gather to pay tribute to a life well-lived. A celebration of life will occur at Lora's home after the service. If planning to attend, please dress in a shade of Lora's favorite color, pink, to honor her love and positivity!
