Judy Karen Laird

February 27, 1943 — December 4, 2018

Judy was born in Oakland, California on Feb 27, 1943 and passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 next to her loving husband Ed.
Judy was a resident of Rocklin, California at the time of passing.

Judy graduated from Antioch High School in 1960 and from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1964 with Spanish, French & History degrees. She got her final teaching certification from the University of California, Berkley California. She got an MS degree in 1977, studied Counseling & Human Development at Troy State University in Troy Alabama. Judy taught Spanish at Carmel Middle School in Carmel California from 66-68.

Ed & Judy were married on July 3, 1971 in Sacramento California. They lived in various states from California to Georgia while Ed was in the Air Force until his retirement in 1992.

Judy's sister Kris & husband Jim Hedlund are currently living in Brentwood CA.

Some of Judy's favorite places are Pacific Grove, Cambria, Pismo Beach, & Santa Barbara California.

Judy Laird started to learn to be a wheat weaver in 1986 and went on to become an important straw teacher and straw artist in the northern California area and was appreciated nationally as well. When she was most active she held classes in her home, gave demonstrations at schools, clubs and at various fairs and festivals. In 1999, she exhibited 12 wall pieces and 80 Christmas ornaments at Latitudes Restaurant Gallery in Auburn, CA and the same year had an exhibit at the Fabled Tables Gala Benefit.

For several years she actively participated in contributing and decorating the Governor's Mansion Christmas Tree in Sacramento when our organization had that project. In one of her articles, it is noted that she taught over 145 students. Many of us have taken classes from her and are familiar with her careful directions and her beautiful, precise, and as perfect as possible examples she would display.

She was a past president of California Wheat Weavers Guild and was often a teacher at our yearly conferences. She held several offices in the National Association of Wheat Weavers and taught at national conventions as well as co-chaired a convention in Sacramento. Judy was a very important part of the Straw Art world, and as a dear friend, very important to All.

She will be remembered by her family and friends for her endless patience, love and kindness that was extended well beyond that of her family. Judy loved being around her family and friends, and will truly be missed.

There isn't a minute that goes by that we don't think of her and think of the wonderful life she shared with us.

THANK YOU
