John Erik Zyss, a beloved husband, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and dear friend, passed away on June 19, 2025, at Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Sacramento, California, at the age of 60. Born on December 17, 1964, in Redlands, California and raised in West Sacramento, California. John brought joy and warmth to everyone who had the privilege to know him.
John was known for his remarkable memory and his passion for music. He could easily recall the names of singers and drummers from his cherished music genres, a testament to his deep appreciation for the art. His devotion extended to his work with Christian concerts, where he found solace and purpose. John also enjoyed acting and Civil War reenacting, sharing countless memorable experiences with his dear friends Jebby Moates and Dan Schields.
Throughout his life, John faced numerous health challenges with unwavering strength and resilience. He endured two separate rounds of hemodialysis, each lasting six years, and underwent a kidney transplant in 2013. Despite battling keratoconus, Bell's palsy, osteomyelitis, high blood pressure, end-stage renal disease, multiple heart attacks, a quadruple bypass in 2020, spinal compression surgery, MRSA blood infections, a muscle abscess, and a broken wrist, he remained an inspiration to those around him. Remarkably, he never complained, exemplifying his incredible spirit and positive outlook on life.
John was the epitome of love and kindness. His beloved wife, Cassandra Zyss, noted, "His heart was bigger than his body." Married for 23 years, Cassandra described John as a gift from God, a compassionate and loyal partner who took the commandment to love one another to heart. Their bond was one of deep friendship and mutual respect, filled with laughter, support, and shared experiences.
John was also proud of his extended family, including his sister, Tuolumne and Mark Meier (brother-in-law), Half-sisters Ingrid Timbs, and Anna Hill. He shared a special connection with his niece Trinity Wickenhauser. The joy of family extended to his uncles and aunts, Manya & Ole Wik, and Alex & Ronda Klistoff, as well as his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Cynthia & Greg Landin. John cherished his many cousins and second cousins, nieces and nephews, celebrating their accomplishments and watching them grow. God blessed John with true and loving friends in Jim Beeding and "Mama" Janice Beeding Tiner.
John's hobbies included indulging in good movies, attending music concerts, being a serious Giants fan, going on train rides, and most importantly, lavishing love on his furry companions—his cherished cats Madbum, Hunter, Earl, Spencer, Jessie, and Snowball.
John Erik Zyss leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering grace in the face of adversity. His Celebration of Life service will be held on June 27, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel in Rocklin, California. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him.
