John Williams

John Williams was a champion - not just because his athletic talent at Fresno’s Washington Union High and Reedley College enabled him to play defensive back for San Diego State’s 1966 NCAA National Football Championship team. Nor because he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles and played for legendary coaches Don Coryell, John Madden, and Bill Walsh during his college and semi-pro careers. John was a champion to all who faced a challenge, needed a strong supporter, wise counsel, and trustworthy friend.

John believed in people and redemption. He lived a life rooted in faith, love, family, and purpose - advocating for troubled youth in his work as a Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall counselor; inspiring compassion and strength of character as a Young People’s Willing Worker leader at Prayer Garden Church in San Jose; and mentoring students throughout his 33-year career as a California community college administrator. He was admired for his integrity, professionalism, and dedication as associate dean at Reedley College, and as student services vice president at both Grossmont College in La Mesa, and San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.

Those who called him friend - some since youth, others from work, church, the Fresno and San Diego chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, or the golf course in Sun City Lincoln Hills - will remember his warm smile, charisma, and their camaraderie. But the few who were blessed to call him husband, father, or grandfather will forever celebrate John’s legacy as a steadfast protector, provider, encourager, and advocate. He believed in them, empowered and invested in them.

He is survived by Benie, his wife of 60 years; children Julie & Keith Smith, Jenel & Clarence Few, and Jabari Williams; and granddaughters Claire, Serena, and Simone. He loved them deeply. He was their champion - and he’s gone home to claim his heavenly reward.
