It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of John Martin Lignell, Jr., affectionately known as Jay, who left us unexpectedly on April 18, 2025, due to a catastrophic brain bleed. Born on May 26, 1973, in Oakland, California, Jay was a beacon of warmth and joy, illuminating the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jay's professional life was impressive and fruitful. He was one of the top producing executives at Oracle, serving as HCM Sales Manager, and he dedicated fourteen years to Paychex prior to that. His work ethic reflected his genuine dedication, not only to his career but also to the family that he loved immeasurably.
An avid golfer and sports fan, Jay brought his competitive spirit and passion into every aspect of life. He proudly earned his letter on the Dublin High School golf team and continued to play throughout junior college and college, while also showcasing his skills on the baseball field. His commitment and enthusiasm were mirrored in his personal achievements and family life.
Though Jay attained significant successes in his career, his proudest accomplishments were his children—Alyssa and Nate Lignell. He took immense pride in their achievements, including celebrating Alyssa’s graduation from CSU Chico and eagerly looking forward to Nate’s role in coaching the San Diego State women's basketball team in the championship. His love for family was evident not just in his words, but in every hug and shared moment, making him a loving protector of his wife, Melanie.
Jay met Melanie in 2012, and their bond quickly grew deep and meaningful. Their love story blossomed through shared passions of dancing, wine tasting, and traveling. Jay's romantic spirit shone brightly when he surprised Melanie with a marriage proposal during a birthday trip to San Francisco in 2018, culminating in their wedding in October 2021. Their love was further celebrated during a special anniversary trip to Maui in October 2024, moments that Melanie will forever treasure.
Family gatherings were filled with laughter, hugs, and playful memories, especially when they included his cherished nephews, Noah Lignell and Marvin MacDonald. Jay was looking forward to seeing Noah graduate from San Diego State in May of this year. Marvin fondly recalls the fun rides they took together at the State Fair and the joy of seeing Uncle Jay fly off the slide in the funhouse. Jay’s captivating personality left a lasting impact on the lives of those around him, effortlessly making everyone feel welcome and valued.
Jay was more than just an accomplished man in his career; he was a dedicated coach in Nate's baseball team at Rocklin Little League, reflecting his genuine care for nurturing young talent and fostering teamwork. He approached every interaction with sincerity and confidence, always making it a point to look you in the eye and call you by name. His remarkable communication skills enhanced his ability to connect with people, including his practice of coaching children, proving his heart was as big as his talents.
Jay's legacy is built on the love and memories he created with family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife Melanie Lignell; children Alyssa and Nate Lignell; mother Beverly Lignell; uncle Walter Lignell; sister Debbie Lignell; nephews Noah Lignell and Marvin MacDonald; mother-in-law Judy MacDonald; brother-in-law Jonathan MacDonald; and father-in-law Bill MacDonald and Debbie MacDonald.
Jay is preceded in death by his father, John Martin Lignell Sr. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, for his laughter, his unwavering support, and the way he embraced life. As we celebrate the extraordinary man he was, let us remember Jay not only for his achievements but more so for his giving heart, his warm hugs, and the indelible mark he has left on our hearts.
