John Lewis Hunt

April 9, 1929 — October 12, 2020

John Lewis Hunt, 91, passed away in the company of his wife Jo Ann on October 12, 2020, in Sacramento. Born on April 9, 1929, in Ft. Worth, Texas, he was the firstborn child of Greffery and Bernice Hunt. He had 3 siblings: David Hunt, Joyce (Hunt) Pruitt, and Elaine (Hunt) Craft.

John worked his way through college, graduating from Texas A&M with a degree in chemical engineering, and then worked for 38 years for Procter & Gamble, moving from Dallas to St. Louis to Cincinnati to Auburn, CA. He was an army veteran of the Korean War, and though he rarely talked about his experiences, he was proud to have served his country.

John loved hosting parties for family and friends, sharing good food, and telling his newest joke. He was an avid (occasionally cutthroat) contract bridge player, crossword puzzle solver, lifelong reader, and history buff.

Those who knew him will fondly remember his favorite words "what you don't know is…" and "'nuff said." His children remember him serenading them on school mornings with quirky folk songs like Sweet Betsy from Pike and When I First Came to This Land.

John was predeceased by his first wife of 47 years, Elizabeth Ann McGuire Hunt (d. 1998), and his brother, David.. He is survived by his loving wife Jo Ann Hamilton Hunt; three children and two step-children: Karen Hunt of Santa Fe, NM; Steve Hunt and his wife Rhonda of Statesville, NC; Janet Benson and her husband Chris of Auburn, CA; Robert Fleming of Entebbe, Uganda; Joleen Winter and her husband Bill of Easton, CT; five grandchildren: Thomas Hunt, Brian Hunt, Emily Benson, Makena Winter, and Amelia Winter; and four great-grandchildren: Hannah Hunt, Caroline Hunt, Madeline Hunt, and Hal Hunt; and his sisters, Joyce Pruitt and Elaine Craft.
