Personal tributes to George from Patty and Tanner Price
Patty:
Today we are honoring the life of George Jackson. Although more than a thousand miles separate us, your family in Iowa shares deeply in your sorrow and loss. Our memories of George may be fewer than many of you gathered here, but we want to honor him by sharing a few that have stayed with us.
We first met George when he traveled to Iowa in October of 2002 with Cynde and Aunt Connie. He got the royal treatment—Aunts, Uncles, and cousins from across the state came to Des Moines to see Connie, Cynde, and, of course, check out George. It was George’s first trip to Iowa. We remember taking him on a road trip to visit one of our cousins. After about 20 minutes on a quiet two-lane highway, George commented in amazement that we hadn’t seen a single other car on the road. Welcome to rural Iowa, George!
My sister Margie remembers our mother—Cynde’s “second mom”—leaning over to George and telling him, “You better take care of my Cynde!” It was said with love, but it came with the weight of real expectation! We’re not sure how George felt about our clan, but we all thought he was wonderful. He especially made a big impression on my son Tanner. George was wearing a colorful Chargers cap during that visit, and Tanner really took a liking to it. George, in his generous way, gifted the hat to Tanner—something we’ve never forgotten.
Now a story from Tanner:
I was just starting to get into football at the time. I didn’t know much about the teams or the rules—just that it seemed exciting and that everyone had a favorite. George noticed my curiosity and said, “Well, if you’re going to pick a team, it’s got to be one from California.” He wasn’t going to let me choose just anyone! He walked me through all the California teams, sharing his take on each, but when he got to the Chargers, something lit up. You could hear the passion in his voice. It was contagious. It helped that they were pretty fun to watch back then, too. Before I knew it, I was watching games and cheering at the TV. That moment turned me into a Chargers fan for life. Love you George! – Tanner
Patty:
It took 22 years before we were able to reconnect in person with George and our California family. I’m so grateful we made that trip last year. We had such a wonderful time with our cousins and their families. George was so generous, carting us around in his big truck and making us feel welcome. I was so glad to tell him that Tanner’s love for the Chargers has only grown stronger-and that it was all thanks to him. Before we left, George handed me an original Chargers cap to bring back for Tanner. That simple gesture meant the world. George’s love for the Chargers—and his kindness—lives on here in Iowa.
To George’s family and friends: we are deeply sorry for your loss. To Cynde, Jamie, Katie, Rollie, Larry, and all your families—we, your Iowa family, love you so much and wish we could be there with you today.
