Elsie A. Kern, affectionately known to her loved ones as Mama YaYa, was born on February 23, 1947, in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana. She embarked on a remarkable journey that would take her from the bustling streets of her birthplace to her final days in Roseville, California, all while leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those fortunate enough to know her.
Elsie attended Long Beach Poly Tech High School and Long Beach City College. A proud graduate of nursing school, Elsie achieved her LVN degree and dedicated herself to a career in nursing. Her happiest moments were found in the pediatrics ICU, where her loving and kind nature shone brightly. The compassion she shared with her young patients and their families was a testament to her character and her unwavering commitment to caring for others.
Elsie moved to Grass Valley, CA in 1979 where she continued to care for patients at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.
As a mother, grandmother and gigi, Elsie's proudest accomplishments lay within her family. She thrived in the chaos and joy of family gatherings, especially during the holidays, where her warmth radiated and her decorations brought a touch of magic to each celebration. Her legacy of loving and welcoming hospitality is something that will forever echo in the hearts of those she cherished dearly.
Elsie was not just a devoted caregiver; she was also a passionate reader and an avid lover of puppies. These simple joys added color and vibrancy to her life, elements that she generously shared with her beloved family.
Elsie leaves behind a heartfelt void filled with the love of her family. She was a guiding light for her several grandchildren, nurturing them with the same love that defined her essence.
On April 19, 2025, surrounded by her loving family, Elsie peacefully slipped away from this world, leaving behind the echoes of her laughter and the memories of countless moments spent together. She is survived by her devoted family, husband Gary Kern, daughter Mary McClendon (Mike), son Michael Dawson (Jamie), daughter Stacy Glynn (Mike), son Patrick Kern (Sheila), daughter Colleen Hart. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Rachael, Jordan, Isabella, Patrick, Bevin, Emma, Roisin, Joseph, Luke, and great-grandson Anthony. She is preceded in death by her granddaughter Kathleen.
Elsie is reunited with her beloved mother, Marguerite Seekopp Tassin, father Alfred Seekopp, and sister Lisette Seekopp, who have all preceded her in passing. Though her physical presence may be gone, Mama YaYa's spirit endures in the hearts of her family. Her love and kindness will continue to inspire and embrace all lucky to cross her path.
A small family gathering will be held to celebrate the memories of Elsie's extraordinary life.
