Donald A. Spiess was born in Redwood County, Minnesota on May 17, 1936, to Alvin M. Spiess and Marjorie E. Spiess. He was the oldest of ten children. As a teenager, Donald joined the Armed Services and was stationed in California where he met and married his wife Bobbie. After serving in the United States Air Force as a Military Policeman, he worked thirty-two years for Crown Zellerbach in Antioch, California, as a Lead Instrument Mechanic.
Together Don and Bobbie raised their five children in Antioch and Brentwood, California. They also raised several foster children over a span of 40 years. Don loved to bowl and participated in leagues throughout his younger years, winning several tournaments and trophies. He also enjoyed fishing, playing pool and ping pong at home, and teaching his kids and grandkids how to play and follow the rules. He retired from Crown Zellerbach in 1991, and moved to Oroville, California, in 2002, where he and Bobbie built a home on several acres overlooking the lake. Don enjoyed spending time driving his boat on Lake Oroville, sitting in the peace and quiet of the pine trees watching the wildlife, and watching the sunsets over the lake.
In 2009, he moved with Bobbie to Sun City Lincoln Hills in Lincoln, California. After several years of declining health, Donald passed away at home on May 2, 2022, at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, his five children, eleven grandchildren, and twenty-one great grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.
