Cathryn Grace Zumalt

July 9, 1923 — June 6, 2018

Zumalt, Cathryn Grace

Passed away on May 6th, 2018 in Rocklin at the age of 94 .

Cathryn was born to Howard and Zoe Myers in French, New Mexico on July 9, 1923. She was the oldest child in a family that included six children- two brothers: Maurice and Warren and three sisters: Helen, Maurine and Margaret. The Myers family eventually moved to the El Camino District south of Gerber, California where Cathryn attended local schools and graduated from Red Bluff High School.

Cathryn learned the importance and necessity of hard work at a very young age, often helping to care for family members, because of her mom's illnesses and her father's work related absences. She was brought up in a family with strong Christian values and steadfastly embraced a faith commitment to Christ that would sustain and guide her until she passed away on June 6, 2018.

After high school, Cathryn worked for the WPA, until she and Virgil Zumalt were married. Cathryn continued to work until her husband returned from Europe and he was discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1946. Their first home was on Glenn Avenue in Sacramento, but after the birth of their first two children, Jerry and Jill, Cathryn and Virgil moved their family to a farm west of Roseville in 1950, where two additional children, Steve and Roger, were born. Virgil passed away in 1992.

Cathryn and Virgil were active in the fellowship of the Sacramento Bible Hall, where Cathryn taught Sunday school. During their time on the farm, Virgil primarily worked a swing shift as an aircraft mechanic, so Cathryn routinely tended to livestock, irrigated pastures, gardened and sewed extensively and cared for the family. Milking a cow was not her favorite pastime and she didn't especially enjoy hauling hay, or being chased by angry sows. Cathryn also served as the primary care-giver for her mother near the end of her life and both her mother and father-in-law until their passing.

While living on the farm, Cathryn also found time to serve as a longtime 4-H Leader, volunteered at local school activities, served many years on the precinct election board; and finally out of necessity, learned to drive a car, so she could take her four children to various youth activities, while her husband was at work. She preferred an automatic transmission. Cathryn was elected to and served on the local school board for many years. She also worked as a Shaklee direct sales representative, selling health food supplements and other health care products.

Cathryn resided in Rocklin from 1991 until she passed away. She was active in the Christian Women's group, continued to attend the Sacramento Meeting as she was able and loved the fellowship of both her long-time friends, her family and her neighbors, especially the children, for whom she loved to bake chocolate chip cookies.

Her standard answer to those who might express concern about her was, "You don't need to worry about me; I'm just fine. The Lord has been very good to me and I don't forget to thank Him for it."

For by Grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works; and God hath ordained that we should walk in them.
(Ephesians 2.8 & 10)

And this is the testimony that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
(I John 5:11)
