Her career in nursing spanned more than 40 years. She started her career in the newborn nursery and quickly advanced to the position of Charge Nurse, House Supervisor and later Director of Utilization Review and Case Management at La Habra Community Hospital.

As a couple they were dedicated to the betterment of their community through charitable endeavors and volunteer efforts, to generate funds to help in a multitude of local and national programs. Barbara was in the Red Hat Society of Women which is involved in reshaping the way women are viewed in today's culture by promoting, not only fun and friendship, but freedom from stereotypes and fulfillment of goals and dreams.

Additionally, Barbara was a member of the Assistance League of Greater Placer, where she supported its rich history and shared her talents. As a volunteer with the League, she engaged in personal service to the community and embraced the organization's values of commitment, leadership, ethics, accountability and respect. As a member of this organization she served as a manager of the Thrift Shop which is the chapter's primary source of funding. There she helped members of the community dress for success, helped organize fashion shows for women's groups and other organizations as well as provided presentations explaining how the various programs of the League create a better community.
