Antonio Legaspi Alvarado was born to Consorcia and Daniel Alvarado on 1/29/1948 in Gastambide, Manila, Philippines. On January 12, 1976, he married his beloved, Evelyn Ongkingco, who proceeded him in death on February 27, 2015. He is survived by his sons, Mauro Antonio and Mark and grandson, Kai Antonio. He was the third of nine siblings and their spouses, Efigenia & Virgilio Antonio (both deceased), Daniel & Anita, Edwin & Rowena, Leona & Mike Gray, Marilou & Oscar Custodio (both deceased), Luis & Lolita, Claudia & Sanjay Pothen and Filomena (also deceased). He also loved numerous nephews and nieces. He was called to eternal rest on April 10th in the arms of his son, Mark.
Antonio was very unique, so much so that he had several names. To most people, he was called Mayo; to his siblings, he was named Barok, and to his friends he was known as Tony.
Antonio studied at the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines where he graduated with a Business Degree, specializing in accounting. He moved to Guam where he worked as an accountant at the Guam Reef Hotel, Ace Hardware and the Guam Press Tribune and an auditor during the administration of Governor Carl Guttierez in 1979. He and his family moved to California in 1985 after his wife, Evelyn, was diagnosed with renal disease, and they made their home here in Roseville. He initially worked at Hewlett Packard, also the Ramada Inn off Fulton Avenue in Sacramento and retired from the Franchise Tax Board. To supplement his income, he also helped individuals during tax season. Antonio was also one of the founding fathers of the Filipino Association of Greater Roseville where he served as Director, choir member and volunteered for fundraising events.
Antonioʼs passion was gambling. He enjoyed rooster fighting and dog racing while in Guam. He took up horse racing in California and enjoyed going to casinos, especially Thunder Valley. Even when his income became limited, he enjoyed going to the casino just to meet friends and eating at the all you can eat buffet before the COVID pandemic. He enjoyed spending time with all of the friends he made with the casino staff. His other past time was karaoke. His favorite songs were "My Way," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," and "Please Release Me."
Antonio also loved food. After he was diagnosed with diabetes, you could frequently find him eating at the Oriental Market, feasting on Halo Halo and other sweets that he knew he was not allowed to eat.
Antonio was a loving husband. When his wife Evelyn was diagnosed with kidney disease, moved his family to California, knowing that moving there was her only chance of getting the care she needed. He was vigilant when her disease became more challenging and complex and was always by her side when she was hospitalized.
He was a loving father. Even though his parenting skills were unique, and he never specifically verbalized his love for his children, there were unspoken words and gestures to show his love for his children.
Antonio Alvarado lived an interesting and fascinating life. He was loved by many and will be missed by those whose lives he touched. Rest in peace Antonio.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to gofund.me/e86ffe55 to help cover funeral costs.
